Monmouth County officials are seriously concerned about this massive invasion of seagulls and are searching for solutions to the problem. Residents are stunned by the amount of birds that have infested the area and are demanding action from authorities to get rid of these pest birds.

“Baldwin said he is concerned about the potential health hazards that may arise from the large bird population that has taken root in Fox Chase.

Monmouth County Freeholder Director Robert Clifton said the county is actively investigating the problem.

‘This is a top priority for the administration. We’re going to get a solution. We’re going to get it as fast as humanly possible,’ Clifton said.”

A large, growing group of pigeons have infested Washington County and are causing officials to worry about the health and well-being of its population. Before the population and visitors get sick from bird droppings, the town is brainstorming ways to fix the pigeon infestation without harming birds or the environment.

Since the old Washington County Tennessee courthouse in Jonesborough was taken over by pest birds, the accumulation of bird droppings on its exterior has caused a significant mess to its façade.

“ ‘I’d say there’s 150, 200 pigeons up there, it gets more every day,’ said Jake Hensley.

Hensley’s spent the last two decades fighting a losing battle.

‘They’ve been a problem for years, but it’s worse this year than it’s ever been,’ said Hensley.

The Washington County courthouse maintenance director cleans bird droppings every morning.

‘We have to keep the porches and ramps washed off so people don’t have to walk through,’ said Hensley. ‘They need to get rid of them.’

The county is coming up with a plan to eliminate the problem. Some will likely be trapped and killed. The county will also remove the windows so the birds can’t roost there. But first, leaders will install sharp bird control strips on all flat surfaces.

‘The manure’s really in there,’ said Hensely. ‘I mean really in there.’

They know they won’t be able to get rid of all of the animals, but they say it’s time to do something.

‘If this keeps on, somebody’s going to get sick,’ said Hensley.

Read more: http://www2.tricities.com/news/2011/nov/18/washington-county-officials-brainstorming-ways-fix-ar-1469380/

As know, the buildup of bird dropping can cause structures to deteriorate over time. As well, the cost to clean the mess left behind by pigeons can surpass the cost involved in the installation of humane bird control systems.

The Preservation League of New York State has awarded BirdMaster Bird Control Systems, for an outstanding job performed in the New York Public Library, NY. This exterior preservation job entailed hard work, patience, and qualified professionals. The installation of humane bird control systems was a necessity as it prevents birds from depositing guano on the stone works which was causing deterioration of the stone.

BirdMaster is honored to have participated in this restoration project and is proud that its virtually invisible installations will protect structures from the damaging and disfiguring effects of bird guano, while retaining and preserving the building’s historical integrity.

“Patience and Fortitude, the iconic marble lions facing Fifth Avenue, have always welcomed researchers, visitors and tourists alike to the front plaza of the New York Public Library. Unfortunately, until recently, what awaited them was a soiled, pigeon-infested structure with missing and crumbling stonework shrouded in safety netting. Now, in time for the Centennial of the original opening, the facades have been restored to their original brilliance.” — Timothy Allanbrook AIA of Wiss Janney Elstner Associates

‘Please don’t feed the pigeons’

This year, in early January, a young New Brunswick woman contracted a potentially fatal condition known as Cryptococcal Meningitis. This is a serious fungal disease carried in the feces of pigeons, easily transmitted to humans simply by coming into contact with pigeon droppings.

“The debilitating illness attacks the spine and the brain, causing severe swelling. It left her confined to a hospital bed in a state of delirium for weeks.

But the most devastating consequence of the sickness is that Richards is now blind.

‘Be aware of this disease. It could kill a child in a heartbeat,’ Richards said from her hospital bed.

‘It could kill a senior in a heartbeat without you even having to worry about the symptoms. It comes on that fast. If you don’t realize the symptoms, it could kill you, too.’

Richards’ warning comes on the heels of Fredericton city council’s approval earlier this month of a recommendation it toughen its animal-control bylaw to make it illegal to feed pigeons.

While such complaints are unusual, a problem exists on the city’s Grandame Street with a property owner who refuses to stop feeding the birds. The pigeons are roosting on roofs and defecating.

The new law will give the city’s bylaw enforcement officers the power to ticket and fine offenders.

‘Please don’t feed the pigeons,’ Richards said. ‘Try to shoo them away, if you see them. It (the disease) is horrible. The pain that you get from this disease is crippling.’

‘The after-effects are with you for life and you just can’t stop thinking about it. I just want other people to know and try to stay away from pigeons.’

Oddly enough, Richards said she has no recollection of ever being anywhere near pigeons.

‘I am still wondering to this day where I got it. I could have stepped in it and brought it into the home. I just don’t know.’

Richards said the symptoms started with a migraine headache -one that wouldn’t go away. She was admitted to hospital Feb. 10 after many days of intense head pain. Shortly after, she went into a comalike state.

‘When I woke up I thought I had a mask over my eyes, but I was wrong. I was blind. I was recently told that I will be blind for the rest of my life. This is a tough thing for a 23-year-old to go through. My world crumbled around me.’

Richards said the odds of surviving the disease are 50-50.”

New York Public Library President, Paul LecClerc, along with city officials, gathered on 42nd street this this past Tuesday to celebrate the substantial completion of the $50 million, 3-year restoration project. In 2006, a building survey revealed severe deterioration and soiling on the façade, including the Corinthian column capitals, lion head keystones and scroll modillions. Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., the architects who performed the survey, attributed the deterioration to various factors including pigeon guano.

Pigeon guano corrodes building facades and has been a big problem for historic buildings throughout the years. When the architects of the restoration project realized the scope of the problem, and the need to bird proof the building to prevent future corrosion, they called the experts: BirdMaster Bird Control Systems. BirdMaster is the architect’s choice and #1 specified bird Control Company for historic preservation. Over a 3-year period, BirdMaster’s Bird Control Professionals installed over 18,000 square feet of bird netting. Not only is the netting virtually invisible, it will not harm pest birds. For over 20 years, BirdMaster has been protecting our nation’s architectural and historic treasures from pest bird infestations. Our bird control portfolio includes sites such as the Statue of Liberty (New York), Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, the National Cathedral in Washington, DC and a legion of other prestigious landmarks. Our commitment to historic preservation has led to assignments on the campuses of nearly every Ivy League college, and most of the government buildings lining Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC

When a Cooper’s Hawk got stuck in the netting of the Andrew Square T-Station earlier this week in Boston, MA officials called animal rescue workers and professional falconers to the scene. However, all efforts to free the hawk failed. According to Channel 7 News in Boston, “Even professional falconers are stymied”. After seeing reports of the situation, John Pace, President of BirdMaster Bird Control Systems, contacted the MBTA to see if they could help and their professional bird control installers were soon on the scene. For over 20 years, BirdMaster has been protecting architectural structures from pest birds without harming them, so they knew just what to do to save this one. Working with the animal rescue league, BirdMaster was able to maneuver the existing netting to allow the hawk to escape. Danielle Genter, from the Animal Rescue League then scooped the hawk up and rushed it to Tufts University Vets in Grafton, MA. “It’s kind of heart wrenching when you see a bird slamming into windows and falling. Seems helpless. But it’s good that she (Genter) was here and she took him right away so I’m sure he’ll be fine”– Will Barretto, Operations Manager with BirdMaster Bird Control Systems.

Bird droppings (Guano) pose serious health risks to humans from bacteria and pulmonary invasive spores. The acidity in bird guano also degrades stone and metal, attacking the substrate of buildings causing permanent damage. Concerned, Brooklyn Museum of Art curators contracted BirdMaster to prevent pest birds to the nooks and crannies of their Lion Statue – BirdMaster had previously installed bird control systems which had successfully protected their Main Entrance Portico from pigeons.

To prevent pigeons from coming back and nesting on the sculpture, BirdMaster bird proofed it with installations that are virtually invisible from the ground. To permanently solve the bird infestation problem, BirdMaster’s bird control experts secured it using stainless steel cable, PVC coated stainless steel mesh and stainless steel spikes.

Understanding and capitalizing on the psychology of birds – means BirdMaster can predict what kind of architectural elements birds find attractive – which is crucial in preventing pigeons from coming back. BirdMaster has saved customers countless dollars by creating and executing plans which uses the minimum of hardware to create maximum results, leaving the aesthetics of the subject without compromise.

BirdMaster’s humane bird control systems do not harm birds. They simply fly away to other habitats.
